The concept of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) is distinct from, and more complex than, a conventional heritage site or protected area/landscape. A GIAHS is a living, evolving system of human communities in an intricate relationship with their territory, cultural or agricultural landscape or biophysical and wider social environment.  The humans and their livelihood activities have continually adapted to the potentials and constraints of the environment and also shaped the landscape and the biological environment to different degrees. This has led to an accumulation of experience over generations, an increasing range and depth of their knowledge systems and generally, but not necessarily, a complex and diverse range of livelihood activities, often closely integrated.  The resilience of many GIAHS sites has been developed and adapted to cope with climatic variability and change, i.e. natural hazards, new technologies and changing social and political situations,

A raíz del éxito cosechado con el Año Internacional de las Legumbres en 2016, de cuya celebración se encargó la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), y reconociendo el potencial de las legumbres para contribuir al cumplimiento de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas proclamó el 10 de febrero Día Mundial de las Legumbres.  La celebración de este Día representa una oportunidad única para sensibilizar a la opinión pública sobre las legumbres y el papel fundamental que desempeñan en la transformación hacia unos sistemas agroalimentarios MÁS eficientes, inclusivos, resilientes y sostenibles con miras a una mejor producción, una mejor nutrición, un mejor medio ambiente y una vida mejor, sin dejar a nadie atrás.  Con la ayuda de gobiernos, el sector privado, Miembros y organizaciones asociadas, los jóvenes y la sociedad en general, la FAO se ocupa de facilitar la celebración de este Día internaciona
